Private House, Fiscavaig, Isle of Skye, by Rural Design

Local architect Rural Design has completed this all-seasons holiday house in the village of Fiskavaig, Isle of Skye

This small larch-clad house, located in the village of Fiscavaig, eschews convention due to its isolated site. On first visit it was difficult to see how any proposal could succeed if it disrupted the landscape formed by fire and ice, and seemingly undisturbed since the departure of the last glacier.

The decision to lift the building off the ground on small pilotis allowed the house to relate to the wider context - the views to the north and the sun from the south.

The form of the house deliberately narrows to the north, reducing its surface area and focusing the view. The entrance bridge lifts you off the landscape and immediately upon entering you are connected with the distant landscape through the fully glazed elevation to the north.

The other windows are secondary and draw shafts of light into the single volume. Simple timber construction reinforces the character of the house as a visitor in the ancient landscape.
