Nursery School, Berriozar, Navarre, Spain

Javier Larraz, Inigo Beguiristain and Inaki Bergera

The architect’s view

The nursery school follows the model of schools in Italy’s Reggio Emilia district, where childcare facilities are organised around a main ‘square’ that serves as an interaction and meeting point, and a space for communal activities. Given the distinctive longitudinal proportions of the plot, the square had to be
placed in a central position with two separate courtyards at the ends. Classrooms and facilities that occupied intermediate positions - directly connected to both the central square and the playgrounds - were treated as an extension of the physical and visual interior spaces. This layout provides daylight to all rooms. The powerful geometry of the skylights, which respond to activity on the ground, is a hallmark of the project. A colourful lattice wraps around the building and its playgrounds, clarifying and enriching the relationship between the street and the interior spaces.
