Metallic mesh takes the limelight
Sun protection facade for headquarters of Turkish contractors’ association
The Turkish Contractors Association (TCA) is an independent, non-profit-making organisation that represents the interests of the Turkish construction industry all over the world. The association’s new headquarters in Ankara were therefore designed to be a shining example for the whole sector in compliance with the highest LEED certification specifications (platinum). A significant role in the sustainable building concept is played by the sun protection facade made of Omega stainless steel mesh from GKD – GEBR. KUFFERATH AG, bringing sophisticated, transparent aesthetics in harmony with effective protection from solar irradiation.
From thermal labyrinth to natural air conditioning of the whole building, from solar collectors to its own rainwater and industrial water treatment unit, planners and architects created an object that is sustainable right down to the smallest detail. Even at first glance the building conveys the association’s claim to maximum transparency. With 900 square metres of GKD stainless steel mesh, Avci Architects translated this concept of transparency into the physical form of the building. The textile material encapsulates the large glazed facade above the ground floor. Three versions of GKD’s Omega cable mesh with different transparency grades were used and aligned to the angle of the sun: Omega 1510, 1520 and 1530.
The frameless mesh panels tensioned alongside each other generate a seamless visual appearance that underlines the intricate feel of the glazed complex. During the day, the sun protection facade allows an unobstructed view of the outside surroundings while significantly reducing the inflow of solar heat into the building, thus making the mesh an ideal complement to the sophisticated natural air conditioning of the thermal labyrinth. The minimised necessity of additional air conditioning makes a key contribution to the LEED certification grade aimed for by the association. At night, the transparency of the woven skin allows the building illuminated inside to shine, making it visible from far away. The TCA headquarters were presented with the International Building of the Year award at this year’s Building Awards in London.
