Kitchen surfaces

There are a multitude of different options out there for kitchen surfaces, but for a surface to be long lasting and effective the material choice must be well considered

The kitchen has long been at the heart of modernisation in the home, initially led by progressive architects and social reformers in the period after the Second World War. In recent years the designs of kitchen spaces have been influenced by its reinstatement at the heart of the home. The economic climate has led to people eating in rather than dining out, and the popularity of TV chefs has upped the importance of the kitchen as a place to live rather than just cook. With this has come an increase in the surface finishes, colours and textures of materials available.

When specifying kitchen surfaces there are many properties to take into account including hygiene, surface finish, performance, aftercare and stain resistance. Different materials have different properties and these should be considered to get to most out of the specification.

Hygiene is particularly important in the kitchen. Surface materials should prevent bacteria and mould growth. Corian is NSF/ANSI 51 certified for food contact and therefore has become a popular choice for food preparation areas where the look is also of importance. Many stone surfaces also have natural antibacterial properties.

For longevity, surfaces should be both stain resistant and easy to clean. Non-porous materials prevent stains from being able to penetrate the surface. Hard stone surfaces, such as granite and quartz, have a natural resistance to aggressive substances like acidic food and cleaning agents, whereas softer stones like slate and limestone tend to react with acid, leaving dull or light patches - as such, these are not recommended for kitchen surfaces.

Toxicity is also important to consider. Internal air quality can be affected by the volatile organic compounds released by materials. Here, wooden worktops are an obvious choice, if finished with natural oils.

When sustainability is of key importance, a number of options are available. End-grain wooden worktops give the traditional feel of wood, but can be manufactured from waste material. Recycled glass worktops are becoming more popular, with several different choices available. These are most commonly
manufactured from waste brown, green and white glass bottles, which are crushed and mixed with resin to form a surface material.
