Kalzip XT sheets
Sir Nicholas Grimshaw puts Kalzip to work for rail bridge
Newport Station in south Wales, is being redeveloped by Network Rail, with new passenger concourse buildings and footbridges, designed by architect Grimshaw.
Railway tracks bisect Newport, and each half of the town has a distinct character. The new station design embraces this divide, creating two new concourses, linked by a large footbridge. The spiral form of the station mirrors the journey across the bridge and back down to the platforms. The redevelopment is scheduled to be completed in September.
The bridge has Kalzip XT sheets, with vertical flowing lines and a geometry that is curved in section as well as on plan. On the north and south terminals, XT sheets are used to achieve an ambitious design. Each sheet is unique and can only fit into its allocated position, like a large-scale 3D jigsaw. In fact, very few fabrications are the same on this project. They generally have a single profile, but their orientation and positioning creates a complex geometry.
Advances in XT technology have allowed Grimshaw to achieve convex radii as low as 3m. On the south terminal there is a mirrored pair of tapering flashings.
