Horsted Park Residential Development

Proctor and Matthews Architects

The architect’s view

Horsted Park is a 337 unit housing led mixed use project being developed by Countryside Properties on a brownfield site located in Chatham, Kent. Countryside Properties encouraged a design that uses vernacular references and carefully-selected materials to give character and individuality to the scheme. The design for Horsted Park takes its spatial cue from traditional Kent farmsteads to produce a series of squares and courtyards that provide shelter, open spaces for residents and a comfortable, domestic environment. To create a high quality scheme careful consideration has been given to the detailed design of individual units, for example in the use of projecting brickwork panels, whose patterns mirror historic brick bonding in nearby Rochester. The bricks protrude by 100mm in a chequerboard pattern, giving each property a visual emphasis and a sense of rhythm as the motif is repeated across the development.
