GKD mesh provides glistening touches to the Student Activities Center at UCLA

With almost 100 years of history and more than ten Nobel prize-winners among its alumni, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is among the most respected universities in the world. A popular meeting place for cultural exchange and leisure activities is the Student Activities Center on the UCLA campus. When redesigning the lobby area and lounge, the architects used metallic mesh from GKD – GEBR. KUFFERATH AG (GKD).

The Student Activities Center provides campus residents with space for a large number of student training offerings and recreation and leisure activities. Numerous meeting rooms, a basketball court and an outdoor pool invite the students to take part in workshops, relax with friends or take time to study.

For the redesign of the lobby area and the lounge, the architects Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates were looking for a style element that not only matched the facility’s modern spirit, but also fulfilled the complex aesthetic and functional requirements. They opted for two types of metallic mesh from GKD. One hundred square metres of Sambesi stainless steel mesh spans over two floors as a curved metallic mesh wall ending in a balustrade on the top floor. The shining mesh not only serves as an eye-catching feature, but also acts as fall protection.

A total of 15 curved panels separate the lounge and lobby from the adjacent rooms. This creates an air of privacy, despite the translucency of the mesh. A copper mesh measuring 75 square metres is suspended behind the stainless steel mesh and gives the construction its special shine. In combination with the lighting, the mesh creates fascinating light effects and its optical permeability gives the lobby and the lounge a modern and shimmering ambience.
