Energy Forum on Solar Building Skins

6-7 December 2012, Forum Bressanone, Italy

In December the north Italian town of Bressanone will play host to the seventh Energy Forum on Solar Building Skins, which will see architects, engineers, scientists and manufacturers head to this sleepy mountain town to explore the newest developments in sustainable construction.

Although Bressanone may seem an unusual choice for such a major conference, the town was chosen for the Energy Forum due to its commitment to Solar City Bressanone, a project which aims to make solar energy the centrepiece of its energy policy.

The Energy Forum will explore new developments in solar building skin technology and the prospects for green and even net-zero buildings through solar energy capture, new materials and smart building design.

Topics to be explored at the conference include: adaptive building skins, new solar technologies, performance and cost considerations, solar retrofitting, natural ventilation and the thermal behaviour of building envelopes and modelling.

Tilmann Kuhn, head of the Department for Solar Façade at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems in Germany is one of the keynote speakers on the first day of the conference where he will present new solar components which could be integrated into the building envelope.

‘From 2020, new EU laws will require new buildings to be constructed in such a way that they actually achieve a zero energy balance,’ Kuhn said. ‘In smaller buildings this can be achieved with the help of insulation and solar systems on the roof. However, when it comes to larger buildings, just utilising the roof space is simply not enough.’

He added: ‘The demand for surfaces that can be used to produce solar energy is rising. The huge surface area of building skins can be used most effectively to produce cost effective energy with the help of photovoltaic and solar thermal systems.’
