Crowd funding campaign launches for energy generating flooring

A new Kickstart campaign aims to get schools generating their own electricity through kinetic energy harvesting flooring

Pavegen is pitching to raise £50,000 through the crowd funding website kickstarter.com to allow the flooring system to be installed in two new schools.

The system invented by Loughborough University student, Laurence Kemball-Cook, incorporates a tile which flexes up to 5mm as it is walked over generating kinetic energy. This kinetic energy is then instantly converted into useable electricity.

The power which is harnessed can then be stored or utilized immediately for powering internal and external lighting or wireless data connections.

The tiles are well suited to school environments due to the high levels of footfall.

Each Pavegen unit also contains wireless technology, able to send data on footfall and the energy harvested to any website for access by the school or students’ smartphones and computers.

Pavegen tiles have been installed in three schools in Canterbury, where the flooring has also helped the school to engage students in sustainability and energy issues.

  • Could this be used for lighting motorways? Cars & trucks that light up the next low-energy lamppost in front of them? they are a lot heavier and more frequent than kids. (or would the effect of always driving uphill be worse than the saving??) Cant imagine a great deal of electricity is produced, but it is a nice idea!
