Brick House, Aldeburgh, Suffolk by James Gorst Architects

The house refers to an idiom of international modernism adopted by the seaside resorts of Britain, says architect James Gorst

The architect’s view

Formally, the house refers to an idiom of international modernism adopted by the seaside resorts of Britain, though distinguished through its palette of materials. The two brick volumes of the house - one grounded, one floating - are a
pure celebration of the handmade product, crafted 50 miles inland to the west.

A single, narrow window at the floating first floor punctures the public brick facades to the street. By contrast, at ground level, a ribbon of factory-formed anodised aluminium panels and glazing offers views straight through the house to the private courtyard and gardens beyond.

Arranged as two boxes connected by a glazed link, one side allows for the everyday operations of family life - a kitchen, dining and living room - while the remainder of the house accommodates a master bedroom suite and a large private drawing room. The first-floor volume houses guest and children’s bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.
