Be Inspired accolade for McAslan's King's Cross refurb

London station redevelopment beats off strong international competition to take Be Inspired Innovation in Building Award

John McAslan + Partners’ King’s Cross Station Redevelopment in London (AJ 12.07.12) has won in the Innovation in Building category at this year’s Be Inspired Awards in Amsterdam.

McAslan’s design beat submissions by US practices Morphosis Architects and Arthur Golding & Associates in the contest, organised by software company Bentley.

Robin Partington Architects’ Park House mixed retail, commercial and residential development in London won
the Generative Design Award and John A Martin & Associates’ LAX International Terminal Expansion in Los Angeles won the Structural Engineering Award.

AJ Specification editor Felix Mara, a juror in all three categories, said he was impressed not only by McAslan + Partners’ proposal, but also by the genuine and modest presentation style of director Hiro Aso, who maintained that, despite arguments to the contrary, it is perfectly possible for a committee to generate inspired architecture.

Reiterating his ‘many heads are greater than one’ philosophy, Aso emphasised that he was a simple architect who did not profess to be a geek: an interesting angle in a presentation for a software company’s award.
