Artigo - rubber floors

On 4 October 2007 in the Domino Hall at Magna Pars in Milan, Artigo presented its latest rubber floor
coverings – the result of collaboration with Sottsass Associati. Artigo’s new Sottsass collection
comprises three different original surfaces. Zero.4 is a reinterpretation of the Artigo classic ‘bolli’ pattern in a radical manner. Its starting point was a traditional studded surface, expanded to include elements such as raindrops in water. The result is a purposefully erratic distribution of circles in a geometrical but organic design. The texture of Artigo’s new Ebony floor covering was suggested by the grains in wood. This has resulted in an abstract design which remains rooted in nature. Complexity is created by a series of progressive operations on the mould that achieve an almost casual look in terms of the differences in thickness and in the depth of grains. Artigo’s Kayar range is made
by adding fragments of coconut fibre to rubber. Designers Ettorre Sottsass and Christopher Redfern
wanted to take the idea of a primitive building technique and translate it into a cutting-edge
technological product, while still allowing the coconut to convey a sense of nature. All three ranges come in a variety of colour options.
