A+ Awards for GKD acoustic ceilings and media facades

GKD GEBR. KUFFERATH AG has landed two awards at this year’s Architizer A+ Awards for innovative architectural solutions

In the Acoustics product category, the innovative Composite (CMP) mesh for ceiling systems impressed the jury, while the transparent Mediamesh media facade system was named the year’s best facade product. With its combination of jury and public voting, the Architizer platform for architecture and design aims to generate enthusiasm for innovations from the fields of architecture and interior design. This year, a renowned jury made up of over 300 key figures in the industry once again chose a winner for each category, while the winner of the Public Choice Award was selected by participants from over 100 countries in an online vote. The prizes will be awarded at a ceremony during the course of the New York Design Week on 15 May.

Outstanding acoustics

With its combination of high-quality, representative appearance and optimised acoustic properties, the CMP mesh made of aluminium honeycomb supporting plate and acoustic fleece made a convincing impression on the jury in the Acoustic products category. The metallic mesh surface layer and a perforated plate fitted to the back for easy mounting round off the highly stable Composite mesh. In the conference room of the “King of England” ministry building in Stuttgart, which was completely refurbished by zsp architekten, the new development has already demonstrated its optical and functional effectiveness: large panels with a surface layer made of golden anodised Alu 6010 aluminium mesh deliver a monolithic effect. The acoustic effectiveness of the ceiling solution significantly improves speech intelligibility and room-based acoustic comfort.Multifunctional media facade

The jury winner in the Facades product category is the Mediamesh transparent media facade solution from GKD. Rows of LEDs woven into metallic mesh allow moving images, videos and complex graphics to be displayed with brilliant image quality, even in blazing sunshine. In the Long Beach Court Building in California, for example, the transparency of the media facade installed here as an artistic object is perfectly suited to the open and transparent overall concept of the fully glazed building. The medialised mesh is significantly more energy-efficient than conventional billboards while also offering a multitude of other sustainable uses, such as its possible deployment as an effective sun protection screen. Natural ventilation of areas behind the facade and natural lighting with daylight shining through also make Mediamesh ideal for commercial buildings such as multi-storey car parks. The transparency of the media facade grants unrestricted views of the outside surroundings and is therefore also often the ideal solution for the medialisation of buildings with glass facades.
