Shattered illusions

MUMA’s ‘exploding’ glass balustrade for its staircase in the V&A Medieval and Renaissance galleries has finally been replaced and re-opened, after extensive testing and more than one maquette.

The staircase, which is the centrepiece of the museum’s £30 million revamp, was evacuated and closed to the public in 2010 after several panels spontaneously shattered. The replacement, which looks nearly identical to the original, replaces the original replacement for the original Aston Webb marble staircase.
