Ribbon cut on Burwell Deakins' Plymouth Uni wave tank building

Burwell Deakins Architects’ Marine Building at Plymouth University was offically opened by the Duke of Edinburgh earlier this week

Situated on the university’s city centre campus the new building sits at the heart of the South West Marine Energy Park, an international focal point for leading marine teaching and research.

The centre-piece of the scheme are the Coastal Ocean and Sediment Transport (COaST) laboratories that house a number of wave tanks where academics, scientists and engineers can test devices within simulated wave, current and wind conditions. The main tank, which is visible to the public from the pedestrian spaces at the base of the building, will be capable of creating waves more than a metre high.

The use of natural lighting and ventilation along with well-insulated envelopes, a set of photovoltaics and a rainwater harvesting system have allowed the building to achieve a BREEAM rating of Excellent.

Solar shading is provided on the south elevation by a series of three-storey solar fins and a high-performance curtain wall system, which uses two sets of parallel opening elements at each floor level.
