Rendlesham Road: Burd Haward Architects

  • Comment

This small two-storey extension to an existing live/work building was designed to provide lift access between the ground and first floors

Conceived as a low-cost, yet robust structure, the extension comprises an industrial scissor-lift, enclosed and guided by an elegant steel frame and skinned internally and externally with multi-wall polycarbonate panels. The skins allow natural light into the building during the day while providing privacy for users. The vertical movement of the lift varies the brightness of the shaft at night, illuminating the adjacent terrace.
