Cardinal Hume Catholic School is a new, 10,000m2 state-of-the-art secondary school on a greenfield
site in Gateshead.
The heavily glazed £24 million project required solar shading to prevent heat gain, especially during
the summer months.
The 94 Levolux Energy Screens specified will exclude solar heat gain to the classroom spaces duing the day and contribute towards insulation at night.
The custom-designed shading system includes 5m-high vertical screens made from a combination of perforated and solid aluminium. These are fitted to both sides of the side elevation of the school, which is predominantly two storeys with a five-floor tower on one side, and in direct sunlight appear to 'float' in front of the glazing.
Working with GWK Architects, the performance of the screens was futher enhanced with 600mmwide
vertical blades and 250mm horizontal aluminium aerofoil fins. These are fixed externally to the building in areas which are particularly vulnerable to heat gain and provide a distincive visual rhythm to the facade.
These fins, and a walkway section which also forms part of the scheme, were manufactured from extruded aluminium sections. The system projects 600mm with a maintenance walkway, handrail and
latchway system.
