Pagans enlist Gods in protest against Bernard Tschumi's New Acropolis Museum
The worshippers even called on Athena, the goddess of wisdom, to protect the statues, which will be moved from the sacred site to the new museum, due to open later this year.
Speaking to the Guardian, high priest Yannis Kontopidis said: ‘Neither the Romans nor the Ottomans or any other occupational force ever took anything from this holy site.
‘It’s scandalous that antiquities of such value, carved in honour of Athena, should be wrested from their natural environment and moved to a new locale.’
Last year thousands of items were transported from the site by crane to the new museum beneath the citadel.
