Writing Prize 2014: Deadline extended

The deadline for the AJ’s Writing Prize, worth £1,000 to the winner, has been extended until 2 September

A summer extension has been granted to aspiring architectural writers wanting to enter this year’s writing prize.

The deadline for the competition - which is open to both those in practice or architecture students – has now been extended from 11 August to 2 September.

The full line-up of judges this year are: the RIBA Gold Medal-winning critic Joseph Rykwert; the Independent’s Jay Merrick; Alan Berman, a consultant at the prize’s sponsors, Berman Guedes Stretton; author, writer and lecturer Penny Lewis and the AJ’s acting editor, Rory Olcayto.

The theme of this year’s competition is ‘The Crafting of Architecture’.

The brief

In no more that 1,000 words describe how a space you inhabited recently made you feel, appraising any materials the architect used to achieve that experience.

We are looking for pieces that explore the fundamental craft of architecture, the skillful arrangement of materials and sensations that create comfortable and inspiring places for everyday use.

Terms and conditions

Entries should not exceed 1,000 words and must be emailed to no later than 2 September 2014.

There is no age limit for entrants.

The competition is intended for those engaged in practice or students of architectural practice. It is not open to those who have a substantial body of published written work.

Pieces should be wholly the work of the person submitting them.

The decision of the judges will be final.

  • Hi, this is a query regarding the above mentioned competition.
    I had sent my entry to on the 2nd september 2014. Could you please let me know if there is any confirmation that I was suppost to recieve acknowledging the reciept of the entry, as I havent recieved any.
    Also, when is the date of result delaration?
