Wilkinson Eyre takes on Foster in St Petersburg

Wilkinson Eyre is up against Foster + Partners to masterplan Apraksin Dvor, a 14ha market district in central St Petersburg, Russia.

The practice saw off competition from OMA, MVRDV and PRP to win its place in the final alongside Foster + Partners.

As part of the masterplan – for developer Glavstroy – the winning practice will restore the area’s historic buildings and will include ‘respectful new interventions which will be kept strictly within the building heights’.

At the heart of the city quarter there ‘will be a new civic space under a unique glazed roof’, and the existing market buildings will be refurbished to become 'fashionable retail, office and residential spaces as well as hotels and cultural facilities’.
