New images emerge of Foster’s Apple HQ

New images have been revealed of Foster + Partners’ new HQ for technology giant Apple in Cupertino, California

The development, which won planning last month, includes the demolition of existing offices, research and development buildings. This will be replaced with more than 1 million m² of new facilities, including an auditorium and a sports centre.

The doughnut-shaped building at Apple’s home since 1993, will hold 12,000 employees over four-storeys. This main building will contain a staff canteen, meeting rooms, and engineering and testing spaces.

Apple said: ‘The entire campus, indoors and out, is intended to promote shared creativity and collaboration, and spur invention of the next several generations of Apple products.

‘Apple Campus 2 will become a model for the 21st century workplace – a fantastic place to work, to create, to collaborate, and to shape future technology.’

More than 3,700 trees on the site will be removed to make way for the development, but these Apple said, will be replaced by 6,200 trees. In a recent video, Apple vice-president of environmental initiatives Lisa Jackson revealed that 80 per cent of the site would be green space.

Other sustainability measures will include using natural ventilation 75 per cent of the year, with no need for air conditioning or heating, and the building will be designed to net-zero energy standards, using only renewable power.
