Two die on Sao Paulo World Cup stadium site

Two workers have died on a World Cup stadium project in Brazil

A crane operator and a setter, both in their 40s, were killed in an accident that saw a crane collapse on the under-construction Corinthians Arena in Sao Paulo.

The club said in a statement: ‘Just before 1pm [on Wednesday 27 November], the crane which was holding the last module of the structure´s metallic cover fell over the circulation area of the east building.

‘It damaged the front of the stadium, although the grandstand´s structure was not compromised.

‘This was the 38th time that this type of process was made during the construction and a similar piece with equal proportion was set less than a week ago in the south area of the stadium.

‘The fire fighters are in loco. At the moment, all efforts are focused on assisting the victims´ families.’

Designed by Anibal Coutinho, the stadium is due to host games during the FIFA World Cup next summer.
