Two Brits shortlisted for Vienna bank contest

Tony Fretton Architects and Caruso St John are the only Brits to be shortlisted for the Erste Bank headquarters competition in Vienna, Austria.

The two London-based firms are competing against 12 mainly German firms to design a 132,000m2 building, which will neighbour the new Vienna Europe Central railway station.

Each firm will be asked to submit designs for a building for 4,000 employees with ‘outstanding design quality and exemplary integration into the surrounding urban context’.

Jurors will also be looking into the building’s functional performance and ‘communication quality’, as well as energy consumption and economic efficiency.

A final list of five practices will then be asked to produce more detailed designs in February 2008.
