Top practices battle it out for Hereford 'retail quarter'

Terry Farrell and Partners, Holder Mathias, Benoy and Allies and Morrison are four of the big-name practices to have made it to a seven-strong shortlist vying to design a new retail centre for Hereford.

ESG Herefordshire - a joint venture between Herefordshire Council and Advantage West Midlands - has selected the architects on the shortlist of seven contractor-led consortia who are vying for the contract to create a new 5ha retail quarter in the heart of the historic town.

Centros Miller is working with Holder Mathias Architects, Hammerson with Terry Farrell and Leslie Jones, Modus with Benoy, Stanhope with Allies & Morrison and Wilson Bowden with Engle Architects.

The remaining two developers, British Land and Simons, are yet to select their architecture partners.

The shortlist will be whittled down further by the ESG board on 25 June, with the surviving proposals being put on public display in November, prior to ESG selecting the winner early in the new year.

The new retail quarter is the first step in a huge 40ha scheme planned for Hereford, to include 1,000 new homes and a new 'civic quarter'.
