Tea with an Architect? Apprentice star seeks women for free consultations scheme

Gabrielle Omar, star of BBC’s The Apprentice television programe, has called on women architects to take part in a new initiative offering free consultations to the public

Omar issued the plea after only 93 women practitioners signed up to the programme. The small response means women represent just four per cent of the 2,362 architects which have registered for the scheme in the past six weeks.

The Tea with an Architect project invites local residents to meet architects in their area for a free consultation, and is intended to ‘help make architects seem more approachable’.

Gabrielle Omar said: ‘Friendly faces, whether it be male or female are imperative in the success of promoting the profession and making us seem more easier to approach, as increasing that chance of interaction gives rise to opportunities of spreading the word of what architects do and how they can help bring better design to spaces that surround us’.

She blamed the lack of interest from women on the misunderstanding ‘that men are better at representing their companies’.

Omar added: ‘The Tea with an Architect sessions are intended to help make architects seem more approachable as a profession, and rid the stereotype that architects are stuffy old men that will charge you a fee for just saying hello. These events are a platform for communities to get to know the friendly faces that make up the architects in their area.

‘Thus seeing that female architects make up the profession as well as their male counterparts, it is imperative that this is seen to be promoted that way. Hence, why I am calling for more women to join the initiative, as it’s these interactions that are mandatory in the success of promoting the profession and making us more widely used.’

More information on signing up to the scheme can be found, here.
