Talented 10 year old wins Tour de France bike rack contest

A 10 year old from Harrogate, has won the RIBA-run competition to design a bike rack for the Tour de France

Will Hunt saw off competition from 266 other Yorkshire schoolchildren to win the North Yorkshire Society of Architects’ (NYSA) Bike Bay competition.

The winning designs, which are planned to be built in the spa town, were inspired ‘by the steep terrain of the Yorkshire Dales’.

The judges felt that it illustrated perfectly the difficult topography of the first stage of the Tour from Leeds to Harrogate.

Primary school children from across North Yorkshire were invited to take part in the RIBA-run competition to design a bicycle parking bay to celebrate the Tour de France Grand Depart taking place in the region.

The competition was judged by Andrew Jones, MP for Harrogate, Anthony Clerici, RIBA vice president and Tim Leigh, director of Stage One, the company behind the manufacture of Heatherwick’s Olympic Cauldron.

Commenting on the competition, James Mate, chair of the NYSA said: ‘We have been inspired to see such a fantastic range of creative ideas from the children of North Yorkshire. As architects, we work to translate ideas into reality on a daily basis, and we are really excited to be able to work with Will to be able to make his dream into a reality.’

Clerici, commented: ‘The winning entry is an exciting example of great design that celebrates the Tour de France in Yorkshire. I hope the bike bay will become a permanent reference to “the Tour” in Harrogate.’

Leigh added: ‘[The winner] demonstrated very clear design intent, cleverly introducing the day one profile into the architecture of the bike bay. It was a sophisticated entry from such a young designer.’

Hunt’s winning design will be installed in Harrogate before the start of the race in July.

The shortlisted entries will be on display in Harrogate from 3 – 6 July.
