Sutherland Hussey's 'innovative' Lake District building opens

Sutherland Hussey Architects’ latest building, the Yan in the Lake District, was officially opened to the public today (23 June).

The building, which takes its name from the Cumbrian word for ‘one’, has been described by client the Forestry Commission as its ‘most innovative building for 50 years’.

The Yan will provide new facilities for schools and community groups to encourage conservation and environmental projects, and will be powered by a woodchip boiler.

Practice partner Charlie Hussey said: ‘Our intention was to create a modern and innovative building that also sits well in the landscape.

'The Yan has been constructed in a way that both celebrates the crucial role that timber has to play in light of the environmental challenges we face today, and also celebrates the beautiful location with the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.’
