Stratford-upon-Avon seeks new bridge to complement RSC

A competition has been launched to find a designer of a new bridge in Stratford-upon-Avon alongside the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Competition organisers are calling for expressions of interest from architects and engineers for the 'landmark design' to span the River Avon.

The brief demands a 'unique and world-class bridge that will complement the regeneration of Stratford-upon-Avon's waterfront'.

It goes on: 'Designs should blend attractively with the waterfront, the theatres, and two other existing ancient bridge structures, the Clopton and Tramway bridges.'

The competition will select up to five design teams to produce proposals for the bridge, which will cost about £2 million.

The judging panel, which includes David Morley, as the RIBA's architectural adviser, will meet in September to choose the winner.

The deadline for expressions of interest is Wednesday 3 May 2006. For more information, visit www.
