Stephen Taylor shortlisted in France

Stephen Taylor Architects has made it onto the final shortlist in an international competition for the design of a nursery school and day-care centre in France.

The east London practice is up against an unnamed French office in the last stage of the competition to create a major addition to an existing school in the town of La Talaudière, near Lyon, in the south-east of France.

Taylor said he had proposed an independent courtyard - a 'containing arm' - enclosed by a series of classrooms and recreation and learning spaces, linked with both internal and external circulation.

And he added that he hoped that the 'courtyard [will provide] the focus to which all rooms orientate.'
