Spotted: Studio Three's completed Wyre observatory tower

Liverpool’s Studio Three Architects has completed this observatory tower at Rossall Point - part of the £1.6m Sea Change programme to improve the waterfront at Wyre in Lancashire

The scheme, which was won in competition in collaboration with BCA Landscape (AJ 19.05.10), was approved in 2010 by Wyre Borough Council’s Planning Committee.

The tower replaces an out-dated facility used by the National Coast Watch Initiative (NCI) at Rossall Point and includes several viewing platforms open to the public and a ground floor education centre.

Work was originally expected to complete in late 2011.

The five shortlisted teams in the original contest were: Sweden’s White with Berlin-based artist Jeppe Hein; BCA Landscape with up-and-coming Liverpool practice Studio Three Architects; Levitate Architecture with art consultants Grit and Pearl; Ian McChesney Architects with Untitled Practice and Peter Kirby; and LDA with Softroom Architecture.
