John Sorrell, chair of CABE and head of the Sorrell Foundation, has been handed a knighthood in the New Year’s honours list.

Sorrell rose to prominence as chair of Newell and Sorrell, one of Europe’s biggest design companies, and went on to chair the Design Council. He is still chair of the London Design Festival and was knighted for his service to the creative industries.

Joining Sorrell on the 2008 list is Donald Buttress, who was awarded a CBE for his work in restoring cathedrals.

Buttress, who is senior partner at Buttress Fuller Alsop Williams Architects, has worked on Westminster Abbey and the cathedrals of Chichester, Llandaff, Bangor, Sheffield and Leeds.

Christine Hawley was also given a CBE for her services to architectural education. Hawley is currently dean of the Bartlett and head of faculty of the built environment at UCL.

Previously director of architecture at the Bartlett, Hawley was also a lecturer at the Architectural Association and has lectured extensively throughout the USA.
