SOM to build Austrian skyscraper - image

SOM's London office has won the commission to build a 137m tower in the Austrian countryside.

The scheme - which is in the town of Worgl in the Tyrol Valley - is designed to match the height of the famous Stephansdom church in Vienna.

The client, Roadpark Vertwalt Ungs, has claimed that SOM's tower should be a symbol of the modern Austria, given that it sits on a major route between Southern Germany and Northern Italy.

The 28-storey development will comprise two hotels, apartments, offices, shops and a casino, offering a welcome tourist attraction for the 45,000 vehicles that pass through the region daily.
