Three practices have made the shortlist to design the US embassy in Beirut

New York-based Diller Scofidio + Renfro was selected by the US government’s Bureau of Overseas Buildings to proceed to the third stage of the contest.

Global firm Aecom, which has an office in London, also made the cut, in partnership with Atlanta-based Mack Scogin Merrill Elam.

The shortlist is completed by Morphosis Architects, which has studios in Los Angeles and New York.

A statement by the client said: ‘The shortlisted submissions represented highly qualified teams which successfully demonstrated strong innovation throughout all disciplines.

‘These teams also offered a detailed management strategy that recognised the programmatic and local demands specific to the project in Beirut.’

The US’s new embassy in the Lebanese capital will be close to the existing building, some 11km north of the city centre.

It will include residences, support offices and utility buildings as well as a parking structure, access pavilions and a community centre.

Earlier this year, AJ reported that London’s John Robertson Architects had won the competition to design a 16,400m2 headquarters for BANKMED in Beirut.
