Sheffield Media and Exhibition centre comp launched

The RIBA is spearheading an open design competition for a £3 million expansion of Sheffield Media and Exhibition Centre (SMEC).

The plan is to enlarge the council-run SMEC's Showroom Cinema and so-called Workstation cultural industries business centre.

An august judging panel has been lined up, including Featherstone Associates' director Sarah Featherstone, Sheffield University architecture boffin Jeremy Till and Paternoster board member Colin Pons.

It also includes urban redevelopment SMEC boss Margaret Bennett and Andy Topley, chief executive of Sheffield One - an urban development partnership comprising Sheffield City Council, Yorkshire Forward and English Partnerships.

Expressions of interest must be submitted by 18 April 2007. For more information contact the RIBA competitions office on

More information can also be found reference 2007/S39-047665.
