Scunthorpe searches for sports centre designer

The hunt is on for a design team to draw up plans for a new sports academy in Scunthorpe - the centrepiece of a major revamp of the town's Central Park.

The winner of the contest, which has been organised by the RIBA Competitions Office and the Landscape Institute, will be charged with overhauling a 27ha parkland site as well as creating new leisure facilities.

Backed by North Lincolnshire Council, the 'Sports Academy: Reinvigorating Scunthorpe Central Park' competition has been split into two stages. Up to six multi-disciplinary teams will be invited to work up their initial concept designs and will be paid honoraria of £6,000.

Barra MacRuairi, head of renaissance of town and cities at agency Yorkshire Forward said: 'This competition offers innovative and inspiring designers and architects the opportunity to contribute to the renaissance of Scunthorpe.

'The Sports Academy will not only form a physical aspect of the town's regeneration, it will also provide a space that will bring people together as a community.'

The stage one submission deadline is 27 June.
