Scottish island theatre starts on site

This is Edinburgh-based City Architecture Office’s (CiAO) design for a new £600,000 production centre for a theatre

This is Edinburgh-based City Architecture Office’s (CiAO) design for a new £600,000 production centre for a theatre on the Scottish island of Mull.

Set on the edge of a Victorian estate close to the island’s town of Tobermory, the centre will have clear views of the Scottish mainland and is the first phase in the company’s plans for a ‘Creative Campus’ on Mull.

The building will include a rehearsal room/performance space, production offices, workshops and technical facilities.

CiAO Director Moray Royles said: ‘Mull Theatre had little money but huge vision. This building responds by creating a dramatic presence in a secluded site.

‘It plays with the aesthetics of the ubiquitous metal-clad agricultural buildings that speckle the island.’

Construction commenced this month and completion is due in April 2008.
