Schmidt Hammer Lassen lands second major British commission - image

Major Danish player Schmidt Hammer Lassen (SHL) has continued its march on Britain by landing a second major commission in less than a year.

The practice has followed up its proposals for a new library for Aberdeen University (AJ 08.06.06) by winning a competition to design a new City of Westminster College (CWC) HQ on Paddington Green.

The practice saw off more than 100 other submissions from throughout Europe.

SHL claims that the key move in the winning design is a central galleried space which will act as the new building's 'hub' and as a circulation and meeting space.

SHL partner Stephen Willacy said: 'This is an extremely exciting opportunity for SHL.

'We intend to significantly enhance the experience of education for every student at CWC by creating a new building where the design facilitates learning and promotes dialogue and dynamism.'
