Rogers unveils prototype house installation at Royal Academy

The Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners-designed prototype three-storey home has been installed in the courtyard of the Royal Academy

The three-storey Homeshell house uses the prefabricated technology first developed on their Oxley Woods housing estate in Milton Keynes.

The Homeshell house was designed as an answer to the current housing crisis. It uses a flat pack panel system called Insulshel, developed by Sheffield Insulation Group and Cox Bench, and is intented to be constructed on site within 24 hours.

The practice claim the system will enable more homes to be built on brownfield land, rather than on the green belt.

Ivan Harbour, senior partner at RSHP, said: ‘The Homeshell delivers generous space, exceptional insulation, daylight and acoustics. We believe it holds many answers for well-designed and sustainable urban living and could change the way we think about our housing into the future.

‘There is an urgent need for more housing in the UK and this system allows us to meet this need far faster than traditional methods. Having it at the Royal Academy of Arts will provoke debate about how architectural innovation might help us meet the UK’s housing needs – for everyone.’

Installed as part of the RA’s current exhibition on Rogers the house will remain in place until 8 September.

After being exhibited at the RA, the Homeshell will be dismantled and rebuilt on a site in Mitcham, Surrey, where it will be fitted out as the show house for prospective tenants for the YMCA South West Y:Cube Housing project.
