RMJM to kickstart regeneration with university campus in Edinburgh

RMJM has been appointed to design Napier University's £55 million Sighthill campus in south west Edinburgh.

It is hoped the 22,000m2, seven-storey scheme, which will see all but the 'central spine' of the existing buildings demolished, will kickstart the regeneration of the area.

RMJM saw off competition from six unnamed firms to land the project, which will feature a number of facilities for community use including a new £5 million sports development.

Joan Stringer, principal and vice-chancellor at Napier University, said: 'RMJM is a highly-respected and experienced firm which has created many of Edinburgh's iconic buildings and many modern campuses for higher education institutions around the globe.

'With extensive knowledge of the local planning process, a superb record on designing highly-sustainable buildings - and having worked closely together on a number of projects, we are confident RMJM will be instrumental in turning our vision into reality.'

Demolition is expected to begin in summer 2008, with the campus scheduled to open in summer 2010.
