Rivington Street Studios starts Passivhaus school extension
London-based Rivington Street Studio has started work on a Passivhaus extension to a primary school in Tower Hamlets
The project for Stebon Primary School on the Burdett Estate includes the refurbishment of existing facilities and construction of a new Passivhaus addition which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 65 per cent.
The scheme will expand the school from two to three form entry.
The Passivhaus school which is expected to complete in December 2014 will become the first London school designed to the stringent energy standard.
The architect’s view
‘The expansion of Stebon Primary School in the Burdett Estate includes include a new two storey classroom block which has been designed to Passivhaus environmental standards with exceptional levels of insulation and airtightness.
‘The specific heating demand of the building will be less that 15KWh/m2.yr. This should yield energy savings of up to 80% compared to standard construction.
‘The project aims to provide accommodation of exceptional quality which will improve the children’s health and awareness, reinforce the school’s role in the heart of its community with extended family provision as well as provide a free broadband service and a multi-use games area (MUGA) which is open out-of-hours for the community.’
