Richard Parnaby to head government's review of CABE

Richard Parnaby, the former chair of the Design Commission for Wales (DCfW), is to lead the government’s review of CABE.

The AJ understands Parnaby, a professor of architecture at the University of the West of England in Bristol, will be given a great deal of leeway in his approach to his investigations by the review's instigator – CABEs main funders the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, and the Communities and Local Government department.

Parnaby, who wrote Raising Design Quality in the South West Region Through the Regional Spatial Strategy: A Background Paper, cites his research interests as ‘aesthetic control in planning’ and ‘assessing design quality’.

He was the first chair of the DCfW when it was set up in 2002 and has since had roles on the RIBA’s Education Committee and as a diversity champion on main RIBA Board.

Parnaby’s initial findings are expected to be published in September.
