RIBA renames picture library in honour of Robert Elwall

The RIBA will rename its collection of more than 1.5 million images in memory of the collection’s late curator Robert Elwall who died in March

Elwall, who died in March, joined the RIBA as a librarian in 1976 and over 30 years he built up the institute’s image collection, including many photographic archives that were previously at risk.

The newly renamed ‘Robert Elwall Photographs Collection’, library consists of both historical and contemporary images, including pictures by renowned architectural photographers such as Edwin Smith, Eric de Maré and Tony Ray Jones.

In 2005 Elwall created RIBApix, an online database of almost 70,000 images for public use.

The RIBA will officially rename the picture collection at an event on 23 October 2012. This will be accompanied by an exhibition entitled Robert Elwall: Building the Photographs Collection, curated by Elwall’s colleagues.
