Local practices have triumphed in the RIBA North East Regional Awards picking up three of the five regional gongs
Newcastle-based Napper Architects won the region’s Architect of the Year Award. Its Seaham North Dock project, which the judges said ‘sensitively injected new life into a complex background’ also picked up the North East’s Building of the Year.
RIBA Forgotten Spaces North East 2012 winner MawsonKerr picked up the Emerging Architect of the Year Award. The practice won the region’s Conservation Award for its conversion of a Georgian house into an apartment hotel, which was described by the judges as a ‘strong piece of conservation-led design’.
The winners included Cullinan Studio’s ‘impressive’ Maggie’s Centre in Newcastle (AJ 07.10.13), a ‘radical transformation of an architect’s own house’ by Howarth Litchfield, and the ‘simple and well crafted’ visitors centre on Lindisfarne by Icosis Architecture.
The five winning projects saw off competition from a shortlist of nine to bag the prestigious awards.
