Revealed: South Shields’ £100m town centre redevelopment

Images of the planned, £100million redevelopment of South Shields town centre have been revealed

Designed by Newcastle-based FaulkerBrowns, the plans include a new library and digital media centre.

The scheme also features improvements to the public realm, shopping, and leisure facilities, alongside a new library and transport interchange.

David Wells, development director at Muse Developments, said: ‘The sense of community in South Shields is second to none and the new Library and transformation of the Market Place will provide excellent platforms on which the community can thrive.

‘The space will be mixed use with new retail opportunities as well as cultural and learning spaces with facilities for community groups and organisations of all ages to enjoy.’

A public consultation on the ten-year-long regeneration project begins next week.

Work on phase one, including FaulknerBrowns’ library and improvements to the existing market place, is set to begin in January 2015.
