Reid reveals proposals for Enfield

Work has now started on the new PalaceXchange project in Enfield town centre, a £60 million mixed-use development designed by Reid Architecture.

The focus of the scheme is a 14,864m 2'fashion-led' shopping street that will loop between Church Street and London Road and will connect with the existing Palace Gardens shopping centre.

Project leader Carlos Elsesser said: 'The overall plan has been to extend the retail area, while knitting it into the existing shopping street pattern to create a coherent urban fabric.

'We have sought to create an attractive destination on a human scale utilising modern design and good-quality materials and featuring good-quality retailers.

'The pleasant urban environment is complemented by the careful use of signage and lighting effects to create a strong visual impact and attract shoppers to the new retail street.'

The scheme, for ING, also includes a new 'lightweight' bridge, which will link to a new civic facility (pictured) containing a venue for cultural and entertainment activities.

The project is scheduled to open in Autumn 2006.
