Go-ahead for first Olympic legacy housing
A team of five practices including PRP, Karakusevic Carson and Muf has won planning permission for the first post-games homes to be built on London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
Close to 260 homes designed by PRP, Make, Haworth Tompkins, Karakusevic Carson and Muf were approved by the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) last night (28 January).
The project for Taylor Wimpey and L&Q is the initial phase of Chobham Manor – itself the first of five post-games neighbourhoods planned to create 6,800 new homes on the 250 hectare east London park.
Expected to begin phased completion in late 2015, the scheme features a mix of family houses and one to five-bedroom apartments. Around 31 per cent of the residential units will be affordable and all homes with private parking will include electric vehicle charging points.
Some dwellings will aim for zero-carbon rating and all homes will feature smart metres. The first phase will also include retail, play spaces and communal gardens.
LLDC chief executive Dennis Hone said: ‘We are thrilled that the planning permission to start building the first phase of homes at Chobham Manor has been given the go-ahead.
‘The prospect of the first residents of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park moving in as early as 2015 is an exciting one and together with the opening of the south of the Park on 5 April and the vision of a new cultural and educational quarter in development, we are firmly on track to deliver a new heart for east London.’
Meanwhile construction of the PRP-designed initial phase of the UK’s first eco-town in North West Bicester, Oxfordshire has started on site – almost seven years after the former Labour government’s high-profile initiative was launched.
Masterplanned by Terry Farrell, the project for developer A2Dominion features 393 zero carbon residential units, a primary school, community centre, retail and ‘eco pub’.
