PRP completes Stockwell housing scheme

[FIRST LOOK + DATA] PRP has completed this £17 million ‘intergenerational’ housing scheme in Stockwell, London

PRP Architects’ 139 home scheme features studios, apartments, and both three and five bedroom houses arranged around a central communal courtyard.

The scheme consists of three elements which ‘span the generations’, including a six-storey block of extra care sheltered flats with a range of community facilities at ground floor level, two and three-storey terraced family housing integrating with the north and south public areas, and an eight-storey apartment building containing social and private housing.

The site forms the second new build phase of the regeneration of the Stockwell Park estate.

Architect’s view

With reference to the Georgian and early Victorian housing of the adjoining Conservation Area, the blocks have been designed within a strong, geometric London stock brickwork grid that reflects the order of its context and provides a scale of reference to both the existing housing and the Estate whilst unifying the development as a whole.

The order of the grid expresses a ‘piano nobile’ at the base with ground and first floors contained within the first tier and the top tier increased in scale to contain the top floor of accommodation, which is set back to create terraces and allow glimpses through the grid.

Behind the brickwork grid the main skin of the building will be expressed in zinc cladding.

The grid separates itself from the blocks on the southern side creating a loggia, providing large sheltered balconies and solar shading to apartments.
