A third of AJ reader’s want Hawkins\Brown’s Brutalist housing project to win the Stirling Prize
According to the AJ’s well-informed and ever-knowing readership, tonight’s victory (26 September) should go to Hawkins\Brown and Studio Egret West’s revamp of Sheffield’s housing estate Park Hill.
Exactly a third of voters in our online poll plumped for the refurbishment of the flats - way ahead of Bookies’ favourite 5/4 Niall McLaughlin Architect’s elliptical Bishop Edward King Chapel which mustered 26 per cent of the vote.
Sceptics could put the result down to ‘rigging’. The two practices behind the project are among the biggest of those shortlisted for the top prize. Or that AJ’s faithful love 1960s concrete. Either way it was evident from the online clickers that Grafton’s University of Limerick Medical school had not tickled many’s fancy. Just four per cent thought it had any chance of success.
