Planning victory in Isle of Man for Foster Lomas

Foster Lomas has won planning permission to overhaul a hilltop home in the Isle of Man set within a new, privately managed nature reserve

The 390m² scheme at Upper Sartfell will see a new stone structure built around an existing Manx cottage known as Cloud 9 because of its ‘idyllic, elevated mountainside’ position.

According to the London-based practice, the design ‘extends the language of the site’s weaving walls’, defining ‘boundaries in the hillside….[and] emboding a solidity that confronts the harsh climatic conditions of the site’.

The project is backed by an ‘eco-conscious couple’ who have backgrounds in biological science, medicine and education.

Due to start on site next year, the surrounding reserve will feature acid bogs, which are home to rare orchids, flower-rich meadowland, native woodland and lakes to form an ‘area that amplifies the biodiversity potential of the land’.

The Sartfell Nature Reserve will eventually be opened up to the public and link to the Isle of Man’s own long term biodiversity strategy. Future phases include a new visitor centre and exhibition space.
