You asked for it. We built it. The AJ is now on iPad
The AJ iPad edition is now available to download in the App Store and is free to subscribers until April 2013, announces Christine Murray
This is a landmark moment for the AJ in more than a century of publishing. When we last surveyed our subscribers, a number of you asked for the AJ to appear on iPad. Behind the scenes, we have been developing an iPad edition all summer. Now it gives me great pleasure to announce the launch of the AJ iPad edition, now available for download in the App Store and free to subscribers until April 2013.
Brought to you by the same team that designs the AJ in print, and built with the same software used to create iPad magazines such as Wired, we’ve worked hard to craft an edition that is in keeping with the AJ’s tradition and style, while making the most of the additional features offered by this new platform.
The navigation follows a few simple rules: swipe up to read the rest of an article; swipe across to move forward to the next feature; tap a photograph to view it full screen; tap a number to view drawing annotations; pinch and zoom to enlarge an image or detail.
As for interactivity, we’ve lavished the most attention on the building studies, which include interactive floor plans and technical drawings, bonus photography, maps and video. Pinch and zoom into photography or drawings for more detail; tap annotations to view their location on the drawings, or tap the numbers on the drawings to highlight their annotation. We’ve also included links to supplementary content online, either on the AJ website, or on AJBuildingsLibrary.co.uk.
Thank you to the architects who attended our iPad focus groups. Your insight is invaluable and I know that you’ll recognise your input in the final product. But our journey isn’t complete - we’ll be evolving the design of the iPad edition in line with feedback from our subscribers; so please let us know how we can make the AJ iPad experience better for you.
We believe we’ve created a great new way to enjoy the AJ every week, delivered into your hands every Thursday morning, ensuring you’re the first to read our news, comment and analysis.
But please go ahead and download it in the App Store and let us know what you think! Follow the instructions for existing subscribers to log in. It’s free to all subscribers until April and, for non-subscribers, there’s a free issue in the app for you to sample. What happens in April? Once the free trial is complete, we’ll be launching several new subscription packages, to give you more choice about how you receive your AJ.
Having said all that, we know how much the magazine means to you, and we will continue to produce the weekly AJ in print every week. The iPad edition is a welcome addition to our digital channels, which include TheAJ.co.uk and the AJBuildingsLibrary.co.uk. Over the coming weeks, we’ll also be launching a new AJ CPD portal on our website, too, to assist you in meeting your annual CPD requirements.
On all our platforms, we strive to produce the content you expect from the AJ: well designed, well researched, and created for architects.
